Why Theo Von is such a good conversationalist
[Theo Von](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theo_Von) is a podcaster and standup comedian who has recently risen to prominence. Although he performs standup, he is a much better comedian due to his excellence as a conversationalist. He asks unusual questions like when he asked Sal from Impractical Jokers what kind of kid he was in high school, jock, nerd, or Italian?, listens closely asking questions to clear his confusions, and uses his quick thinking to come up with jokes on the fly while playing off of his guests.
Theo Von’s excellence as a conversationalist stems from his ability to play off his audience. He often leads with a question and comes up with an analogy from his own personal life, often funny from pure absurdity. Or otherwise the questions themselves lend themselves to humor.
A technique he excelles at is unexpected humor through association or surprise. He asks surprising questions, for example he once asked “"Do you believe in science? And be honest.” This works because the sheer absurdity of the questions can make someone laugh especially when coupled with a prior serious line of reasoning.
