The Scholar and the Wall
Once, a scholar travelled far through the lands seeking the greatest wisdom. His hair had grown long and matted with sweat and grime. He meditated and wrote every day in journals chronicling all his learning.
On his journey he came to visit the one called Virath. Of him we could dedicate many a story, but suffice it to say for now that he was known for his eccentricity and virtue.
The scholar came to his cave and jostled past his followers and asked him: “How do I build discipline?”
The Virath told him to bring him a hammer. "I asked for wisdom," said the scholar. "So I heard." The scholar brought the hammer to the Virath. He said ”Young man, please build me a wall in front of my monastery to keep my penance in solitude" The scholar spent the day asking how to build a wall and where to build the wall and the reasons for building a wall. The Virath answered little. At sunset the wall stood half finished. The next day the scholar returned with fewer questions and more labor. By evening the wall reached his shoulders. On the third day he no longer asked to learn discipline. He laid each stone without being told. When the wall was complete, the scholar said, "Now I understand." The builder replied, "No. You have become."
